Coffee Table Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Size
Use sofa length, walkway clearance, and table height to choose a coffee table that fits your living room.
Start with the sofa, not the table
The easiest way to choose a coffee table size is to start with the sofa. A table that is roughly two-thirds the length of the sofa looks balanced in most living rooms. If your sofa is 84 inches long, look for a table around 48 to 56 inches. If the sofa is 72 inches, a 40- to 48-inch table is usually enough.
Length is only half the story. Depth matters just as much in a small room. A table deeper than 24 inches can make the seating area feel tight, especially when the sofa is against a wall.
Leave room to walk
Measure the gap between the sofa and the table, and between the table and the TV or opposite wall. A comfortable target is 16 to 18 inches between the sofa and the table, and at least 30 inches of walkway on the sides you use.
In a narrow room, a round or oval table earns its space because there are no sharp corners to walk into. A nesting table can also work: use one table for daily use and pull out the second only when guests arrive.
Match the height to the seat
A coffee table should sit close to the height of the sofa seat. If the table is much lower, you will lean forward to reach a drink. If it is much higher, it starts to feel like a dining table.
Most coffee tables fall between 16 and 18 inches high. Low sofas and sectionals can take a slightly lower table; taller sofas often look better with an 18-inch table.
Check the shape against the room
| Room situation | Shape to consider |
|---|---|
| Long sofa, rectangular room | Rectangular or oval |
| Small apartment, tight walkway | Round or nesting |
| Sectional with a corner | Square or round |
| Room with a lot of angles | Round |
Measure before you buy
Use painter's tape to mark the table's footprint on the floor. Live with the outline for a day. Then measure the door opening and the path the table will take into the room. A table that fits the room but not the doorway is still the wrong table.
If you are choosing between two sizes, go with the smaller one. A slightly small coffee table leaves more room for movement and is easier to style.
