How to Choose Dining Chairs: Height, Width, and Comfort
A practical guide to dining chair seat height, width, back support, and upholstery.
Seat height comes first
For a standard 30-inch dining table, look for a seat height around 18 inches. That leaves about 12 inches between the seat and the tabletop, which is comfortable for most adults. If the seat is too low, you feel like you are sitting in a hole; if it is too high, your thighs hit the table.
Counter-height tables need a taller seat, usually 24 to 26 inches. Do not mix standard dining chairs with a counter-height table.
Seat width and elbow room
A dining chair should be wide enough to sit comfortably but narrow enough to fit the table. Allow about 24 inches of table width per person. If the chairs are wider than that, guests will bump elbows or you will need a longer table.
Back height and support
A low back gives a modern look and makes the room feel open. A higher back gives more support for long dinners. If you often sit for an hour or more, choose a chair with a supportive back and a slightly padded seat.
Upholstery and cleaning
- Fabric: comfortable and warm, but harder to clean.
- Faux leather: easy to wipe, good for kids and everyday meals.
- Velvet: soft and dressy, but needs more care.
- Wood: durable and easy to clean, but less padded.
If the chair is for a family table, favor a wipeable seat. If it is for a formal dining room, fabric or velvet can be worth the extra care.
Try the chair at the table
Before buying a set, measure the table height and the chair seat height together. Sit in a similar chair if you can. Pull it under the table. Check that your knees fit and that your feet rest on the floor or a footrest.
