How to Care for Wood Furniture
Everyday care for wood furniture: dusting, humidity, spills, sunlight, and refinishing.
Dust little and often
Dust with a soft, dry cloth once a week. Avoid abrasive pads and ammonia-based cleaners, which can dull the finish. For a deeper clean, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately.
Control humidity
Wood expands and contracts with humidity. Keep the room between roughly 40 and 60 percent relative humidity if you can. Avoid placing furniture directly next to a radiator, a fireplace, or a drafty door.
Wipe spills quickly
Blot spills with a clean cloth rather than wiping them across the surface. Water rings and heat marks are easier to prevent than to remove. Use coasters under drinks and trivets under hot dishes.
Keep it out of direct sun
Sunlight can fade and dry out wood. If a piece sits in direct sun, use a curtain or blind during the brightest part of the day. Rotate decorative objects so the finish fades evenly.
Protect the floor
Use felt pads under legs and lift furniture rather than dragging it. If the piece is heavy, ask for help. A scratched floor is harder to fix than a scratched leg.
Refresh the finish
If the finish looks dry, a furniture wax or polish made for the specific finish can help. Test on a hidden spot first. Avoid silicone-based polishes, which can build up and make refinishing difficult later.
When to refinish
Light scratches can sometimes be touched up with a stain marker. Deep scratches, water damage, and peeling veneer need a professional or a full refinish. If the piece is valuable, consult a furniture restorer before sanding.
