Narrow Console Table Guide: Sizes for Hallways and Entryways

How to choose a narrow console table by depth, height, and walkway clearance.

Why depth matters most

A console table is usually judged by its depth, not its length. In a hallway or entryway, a 12- to 14-inch depth keeps the piece useful without blocking the path. A 16- to 18-inch depth gives you more room for a lamp and a basket but needs a wider space.

Measure the clear floor between the wall and the nearest door, stair, or furniture. Leave at least 36 inches of walking space in front of the console. If you cannot, choose a shallower piece or mount a slim shelf instead.

Choose the right length

A console should look proportional to the wall. As a starting point, choose a table about two-thirds the width of the wall or the sofa it sits behind. In an entryway, leave at least a few inches on each side so the piece does not look crammed into the corner.

Match the height to its job

  • Entryway: 30 to 34 inches is comfortable for dropping keys and mail.
  • Behind a sofa: keep the top close to the sofa back, usually 30 to 34 inches.
  • Hallway: a taller, narrower piece can work if it does not crowd the walkway.

What to put on it

A console needs a landing zone, not a full styling set. A small tray for keys, a lamp, and one decorative object is enough. If the console is in an entryway, add a mirror above it to brighten the space and give you a last look before you leave.

Check stability

A narrow console can feel tippy if it is tall and light. Look for a stable base, a wall anchor, or a lower shelf that adds rigidity. If you have children or pets, anchor the piece to the wall.
